Water Stain on Your Ceiling? Your Dryer Vent May Be Blocked

One of the most misunderstood problems we see as dryer vent cleaners has nothing to do with the dryer itself. A homeowner notices a water stain on a ceiling or wall, has no idea where it came from, and never suspects the dryer vent. In many of those homes, the cause is a completely blocked dryer vent.

How a blocked dryer vent makes water

Your dryer works by pushing hot, moist air out through the vent to the outside. When the vent is completely blocked with lint, that moist air has nowhere to go. It sits in the vent, cools, and condenses back into water.

That water does not stay put. It leaks out through the joints where sections of the vent connect. If the vent runs through a ceiling or wall, the water soaks into the drywall below and shows up as a stain.

Signs the stain is coming from your dryer vent

  • The stain is on a ceiling or wall along the path the dryer vent takes to the outside
  • Clothes take two or more cycles to dry
  • Humidity inside the dryer when the cycle ends
  • Little or no air coming out of the outside vent when the dryer runs

Why this costs more to fix

Once water gets into the vent, the lint changes. Dry lint is loose and comes out easily. Wet lint packs down and cakes onto the inside of the vent, which makes it much harder to remove. That means the cleaning takes longer and costs more, and it may take more than one cleaning to fully clear the vent.

A blocked vent is also a fire risk. Lint is highly flammable, and a dryer that cannot exhaust runs hotter and longer. Learn how to prevent a dryer fire.

What to do if you see a stain

  • Do not just paint over it. The water will keep coming until the vent is cleared
  • Limit using the dryer until the vent has been checked
  • Have the full vent run professionally cleaned, from the dryer to the outside

How to prevent it

Regular cleaning keeps a vent from ever getting fully blocked. We generally recommend cleaning a dryer vent every two years, sooner with pets, frequent loads or a long vent run. After every cleaning, we mail you a reminder postcard when the next one is due, so it never gets to this point.
