Signs your dryer vent needs cleaning
- Clothes need two or more cycles to dry
- The clothes or the inside of the dryer are still damp or humid when the cycle ends
- The dryer or laundry room gets unusually hot
- A burning smell while the dryer runs
- Lint building up around the outside vent flap, or the flap barely opens
- Water stains on a ceiling or wall near the dryer vent. A fully blocked vent traps moist air, which condenses into water and leaks out at the vent joints. Why this happens

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?
There is no one schedule that fits every home. We generally recommend cleaning a dryer vent every two years. Some homes need it more often. Things that shorten the time between cleanings:
- Running many loads a week, or a large household
- Pets, especially ones that shed
- A long vent run, such as a dryer in the middle of the house instead of on an outside wall
- Vents that run up through the roof
A dryer on an outside wall that vents straight out usually needs cleaning least often. When we visit, we can tell you what schedule makes sense for your home. After your cleaning, we mail you a reminder postcard when your next one is due, so you never have to remember it yourself.
